'Snowman' by Seo You Mi

 Rating: 6.5/10

The title 'Snowman' made me to expect the hopeful story of Christmas or the winter time, but the story was quite gloomy and sarcastic about the society. 'The man' who is the main character in this short story, doesn't have a name that mentioned in the story. This is an effect that the author wanted to show that it's a story of everyone in Korea, not an individual experience by using anonymity.

The man in first decided to not to go to work, but he can't overcome and ignore the pressure from his boss and changed his mind to go to work even the huge snow. During he goes to work by cleaning the snow, he felt hungry and ordered the 짜장면. Even he didn't tell exact address of his location, the delivery man came direct to him through the snow. The man was surprised about the delivery man and asked him how he came to right place even the snow, the delivery man answers "Snow or not, I've got a living to make". This scene was sad because when the snow falls like disaster, office workers and delivery man have to work for their living even though they can get accident by the weather. I think both of them(the delivery man and the man) symbolize the modern people struggling to maintain a livelihood.

And when the man saw Yoo inside the snow, he can't even identify Yoo is live or dead. You was a one who struggled more to win in the competition of society, but he tragically die(not sure) by his passion to win.

I think this story shows the dystopia of Korean society, super highly competitive hierarchy and harsh living condition. Also, I felt respect to the office workers and my parents who experienced these conditions.
