Cathedral by Ramond Carver

 Rating: 7/10

In class, we talked about Ramond Carver is a writer with male-perspective and alchoholic. This was the first time I read Ramond Carver's work and now I understand why he is called alchoholic, male-perspective, respectful author.

Cathedral is a story of a entrance with blind man. The narrator is normal  80s American man who is sensitive. His wife brings her friend who is blind and whose wife is dead, to their home. Narrator doesn't like this situation and he was uncomfortable with that his wife is so much close with the blind man even he is close with her and they were so friendly. But his wife asked him to be kind to him and narrator tried his best to be close and make him comfortable.

When they doped and narrator's wife began sleep, TV showed cathedral. Narrator can see the shape of cathedral but blind man can't. Narrator tried to explain how does it look, but it was not enough to tell how enormous the cathedral is. Therefore, narrator took blind man's hand and drew the cathedral with his hand.

This situation can be weird, but I thought it is touching moment that narrator started to understand blind man. Someone, like narrator's wife, must have interpreted and meant the cathedral in their own way. However, narrator is a new acquisition of a completely new way of perceiving the world, which has never been thought to exist before. And these discoveries, as usual, come with new people. This part left a long lingering impression after reading this short story. It made me to understand why Ramond Carver is a great writer.
