The Swimmer
This story is quite dumb. The idea of this story came out through the main character's brain, which is to swim through his house by jumping the swimming pool to other swimming pools.
Teddy decides after the summer party that he will swum his way home from cocktail party through the array of public and private swimming pools scattered throughout his neighborhood. I think this idea was came out to show his vanity and he just wanted to get attention of respect by this action.
He thinks of himself young, talented, and strong person. But the way his journey continues, he realizes that he was not aware of the situations of his friends and neighbors. Some moved, some became ill, and he lost his home. These are hints that showing the time is passing.
At the beginning of the journey, everyone he met welcomed him and surprised of his decision to swim his home. But as the journey progress, neighbors didn't welcomed and happy to see him anymore.
This story represents millions of middle class Americans in that period. Who depended on extramarital affairs, alcoholism, gambling, and debt, all these activities gradually eat away at relationship every day.
