The Lady with the Dog

Rating: 7/10

The Lady with the Dog is written by Anton Chekhov which is same with 'The Student'. I was very surprised because the theme of these two short story and contents were very different. And I think 'The Lady with the Dog' is much fun and interesting to read than 'The Student', because rather than 'The Student' whose story was hard to understand without knowing the background and religious knowledge, 'The Lady with the Dog' was having much friendly topic and easy to read. I think the interesting part of this story is Gorov's change and their adventurous love. In the beginning of the story, Gorov was not careful to Anna and just treat her as a doll, which entertains him, but in the end, he was yearning for her and anxious about leaving her. I was stunned because it doesn't look like an ordinary man in that period. The second interesting part is the adventurous love between Gorov and Anna. Even tough both having high risk(actually Anna has more) in their affair, they finally got into true love and ended with open ending. This was very disgusting and seems irresponsible to their own family. I thought the ending will be like they go back to their original family and reflect about their affair, because for the people who lived in that era, I think that is normal to be like. But Gorov and Anna didn't behave like that and they did what they wanted.

If Chekov didn't end this story with an open ending, I think the story would become more active and fascinating. However, with this opened-ending, I'm wondering what is the purpose of this story and what does the author wants to tell to readers.
