The Sisters by James Joyce
Rating: 5/10
First impression after I read the whole passage is 'Why the title is The Sisters'. Because the story is more related to the boy and the death of the close one with the boy. As like the CodeX Cantina said, the story of a young boy experiencing death of very close to him and there was a pair of the sisters in it and in the very last story the dead is about a pair of sisters and it could be called the sisters. It was hard to know the whole story because of the lack of information of the background and characters. It is impressive that James Joyce picked up several cultural and historical background. For example the Irish society's economy and the catholic church's behavior. The young boy felt sensation of freedom when he found the card displayed outside announcing the man's death. It's weird but he could feel that emotion because Flynn was his mentor, therefore through him the young boy would feel some compulsion and stressful of the coercive teaching.
The one desired thing that is why I gave this story just a 5 point out of 10 is the ending is too open and vague, therefore I can't draw a conclusion what the author wants to say through this story.
Indeed the story is open and vague, but since we have other stories in Dubliner's following it, it kind of continues through themes rather than a strong conclusion. If you understand "paralysis" and how the story sets it up, the other stories will have more meaning. Good journal.
