Revelation by Falnnery O'Connor
Rating 7/10
Revelation is one of the representative short story of Southern Gothic. Revelation means the act of making something known that was secret, or fact that is made known. And the themes of the story are judgement, grace, and racism. The un reliable narrator narrates the themes with 3rd person omniscient narrative and begins with the main protagonist.
Main protagonist is Mrs. Turpin, and there is the character named Mary Grace. Mary Grace's name marks her clearly as the symbol of grace in the story. This shows the symbol of Catholic religion which is the characteristic of Southern Gothic. Racism ,which showed in this story, is very evident in Mrs. Turpin's view of the world. She prides herself being kind to her black farmhands, she considers them to be idiots and call them nigger. And she discriminates a lot toward black people.
In the end, when mrs. Turpin sees herself, and those of equal socioeconomic status bringing up the rear of the procession to Heaven. The words by Mary Grace inspire Mrs. Turpin's revelation.
